10 things to know about being ginger

27 May 2015

Because being ginger is more than a statement, here are 10 facts you should know about real gingers' lives before choosing that lifestyle.

1- Being ginger equals being Irish.
If you are not from Ireland or the UK, everyone in your country will assume that (i) you are from there or (ii) that your family is. In any case, they will to ask you that in English and will only understand after the third answer you do not give in the Shakespeare language. And if you are living in the UK when being foreign, people will only live you alone the moment you put your passport out of your bag. Yes, you've read it right. This is not 'Republic of Ireland' but 'Republique Francaise'.

2- From March on, stay away from the Sun.
When you are ginger, the Sun is your worst enemy. Whatever you do, whatever suncream you put, however often you put it on; the Sun loves you so much, that it literally burns. From March on, even through the clouds, 15 minutes are way enough for you to get you ever-so-white skin to become passion red. And there's not much you can do about that...

3- Not every colours look good on you.
In this season of weddings, baptism, engagement parties, or just sophisticated garden parties, you would love to wear pastel or lively bright colours. Well, if you are ginger, you can forget almost all of them. This pale pink makes you look like you are very ill, when a light blue makes you look red. Some shades of red look really good on some of us, and some other shades do not work on any of us. I guess that as it depends on our skin tones, we have to try all the colours of the rainbow at least once in our lives. My advice: stick with grey, dark blue and black. And this is why I have just bought a red dress...

4- Freckles are amazingly cool.
I have read many people complaining about their freckles; how difficult it was to wear them etc. But, their is nothing better: no make up really needed, no one really sees how white you limbs are, and you can even link them together to form a dot-to-dot drawing. No way you can get bored then...

5- Beware: the same old annoying jokes on gingers during Summer are on their way back.
I guess I don't have to explain this point. Do I?

6- You could be a Weasley.
I don't know about you, but I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter saga. And with some of my friends, we wondered once to which character of the saga we would identify the most. Of course one of the first suggestion for me was Ginny Weasley - "or maybe Ron". Why? The hair, purely the hair!

7- Your hairdresser will be overprotective.
You want to dye your hair? Well, there are 99.8% of chance that your hairdresser will feel like the protector of it. You want to dye your hair blond to feel prettier or black to match it to the darkness of your soul - or the one you think you have during your teenage years? It's a NO for hairdressers. Most of them will have an argument with you on why you should do it. And they will stick to this argument, even ten years later. You can ask mine.

8- People will envy you.
Have you ever heard the 'Is it natural?' question followed by a 'You're very lucky. I have to pay £xx per month to get a similar result"? If so, you know exactly that even though you are flattered by these words, you can't help yourself but to later consider this people "cheats". However, you know that being ginger is famous and acceptable thanks to them, so you love them, indefinitely.

9- You would look great with Prince Harry.
Because he is one of the most famous gingers on the planet, and he is single, therefore when you meet it, it will be love at first sight. It is a ginger fate that everyone will jealous you for. And if you're lucky, not only will you have a ginger wedding, but ginger babies... and you can even buy a ginger dog with him. And there you would have created the perfect cliché!

10- You will blush.
When you exercise or when it is warmer, whether it is a lot or just a tiny little bit warmer, your face will become as red as it can become. But the worst thing is that you will probably never be able to hide anything. You have a crush on this guy/girl? You find yourself in this very embarrassing situation? You find someone cute? You are angry at someone? You have a secret to hide to the person you are talking to? Well, good luck. Because you will not find any kind of support from your face, and especially not from your cheeks. They will become red. You will blush as hard as one can... Prepare yourself.

But, the main thing you need to know when you're ginger is that you look gorgeous. Whatever they have told you when you grew up, you are still standing strong today. And you should know that you look gorgeous, and I'm not the one saying that. Fashion is! It is trendy to become a redhead this summer. What a better way of saying that being ginger is actually pretty cool?
