Let's make some Cronuts, shall we?

16 October 2014

In American series, magazines, shows, newspapers or in some of your friends party, you may - or may not - have heard of this bizarrerie culinaire: the Cronut.

The Cronut, a croissant-donut hybrid, odd but tasty and famous for having taken over the world in a few months, comes back in our newspaper, TV or Radio morning shows and, of course, Facebook and Twitter news feed.

Having the same shape as a donut and seems to have the same dough as a croissant, the Cronut is realised with different colours and tastes. Mostly prepared in sweet versions - you can indeed find salty Cronuts in London -, the colours used to decorate them has made this pastry become a new concurrent to cupcakes.

Created in the land of the Simspons - first consumer of donuts on Earth - the Cronut was invented by a French Chef, Dominique Ansel. Now I have to admit that I was very surprised - not to say shocked - as a French citizen to learn that this hyper-calorific invention came from one of my compatriots' mind. What?

This pastry has become so famous in the USA, the UK and some other countries in Europe that the seek for the recipe of this food eccentricity has become almost as important as quest for the Holy Grail. Well, Sir Galahad of Kaamelott you can now stop your quest right now! (You can go back to King Arthur even without trying to answer the three questions from the bridge-keeper that allow you to cross the Bridge of Death !)

In the beginning of the week, 'Good Morning America', a morning program on ABC News (American Broadcasting Company) has revealed that the recipe that the French Chef had worked on for four months was finally out.

Indeed, Dominique Ansel has decided to launch a new cookbook entitled 'Dominique Ansel: The Secret Recipes' in which he reveals some of his secret recipes with, obviously, the one for the Cronut. The concept of this recipe - exclusively on the ABC News's website - is very simple. However, the person willing to try this At-Home Recipe would have to agree to spend a couple of hours during the first to day to create the Pastry Dough, the Ganache, and let the magic happen, and everything will have to be fried on the third day - aka, the day during which everything goes wrong.

Considered by the Chef as a recipe of extreme difficulty, if you manage to achieve the confection of the food celebrity, not only your friends and family would be massively impressed, but you will have the change to eat all the calories you have lost in the preparation by only looking at it.

Ready, Steady,... COOK! Good Luck.
