Annoying and Addictive.

01 August 2014

One of the major rules in journalism is never to assume that your readers know what you are talking about. This time, I think assuming that you know who Kim Kardashian is - as well as her family - is something normal, malheureusement.

If you don't know who they are, feel very, very lucky. Please don't try to find out and just enjoy the weather outside - even if it's raining - keeping in mind that you are one of the luckiest persons in the world.

For the rest of you, of us, here is the story of how I discovered an application, on the AppStore, as annoying as the TV-show that relates their lives, 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians'.

" Before you were famous... you were new to Hollywood. "

The star of 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' loves being extravagant, making her everyday life an amazing information that the whole world should know. Indeed, not only Kim has a reality show - and a few spin-offs - relating the eccentricity of the clan (Jenner-)Kardashian, but the diva and her family have millions on followers on Twitter and Facebook waiting for whatever almost-interesting tweet or picture they could post.

Alongside with Kourtney, Khloe, Kylie and Kendall (her half sisters), and 'momager' Kris, Kim has made the media addicted to her image - and, of course, private life. (Last extravagant event made by the brunette: having a week-long ceremony, in France and Italy, to marry her daughter's (North) father, Kanye West.)

That's why when I heard that Mrs. West, who's favourite passion is taking selfie, had launched her own app, I was a bit sKeptic. But, as lately I found myself with some time to waste, I decided to give it a try.

Big mistake.

It is so addictive it becomes annoying. And, weirdly enough, it is so boring and annoying that it becomes addictive.

First step, you "Kustomize" your character; from the form of their face to the form of their eyes, with the obvious major choice of clothes and make-up.

Then, a few seconds into the game, an cartoon version of Kim K appears. She stands like the real one, have the same hips, the same contour make-up and has the voice of the real one.

In the app, which I consider a pink version of the app 'The Simpsons', the goal of your character will be to become a virtual celebrity based on the Kardashian family's example.

In a way, I found myself thinking I was back in those day when I was playing 'Pokemon': a LOT of writing for a lot of I'm-not-reading-boring-(almost)-info.

After the activities (like taking the bus to Beverly Hills (where you can only go after the second level), doing a photoshoot, or just randomly talking to 'Kimmy'), the virtual version of yourself will be able to change their style thanks to what they earn (money, stars and lighting - which, if I understood it well, work together -, point of levels and... "K"s!)

Hey! What did you expect? She was raised in a family in which the alphabet consisted in five letters: "B" (Bruce, Burt, Brandon & Brody), "C" (Casey - the non-famous step sister), "R" (Robert & Robert Jr.), "J" (Jenner) and "K" (Kardashian, Kris, Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, Kendall & Kylie).

Five letters against my twenty-six-letter alphabet, no doubt they are now famous and I'm writing about them. I knew I should have dropped out school after kindergarden. I told you so, Mom!

So if you want to buy a virtual flat, flirt with virtual people that are created and controlled by a computer, do a photoshoot and feel like a virtual celebrity who wrongly spell a lot of things with a "K"... or if you have time to waste lying on the beach, you can download the app quite easily.

But, please, be careful. Once you start, do not forget that the world around you does not stop. Good luck.
